Does anti-fog wear off swim goggles? Yes. Every anti-fog layer wears down eventually, and how fast depends on what it is, how often you swim and how you look after your goggles. If your goggles were clear for a few weeks and now fog every session, that's normal, and it doesn't mean they're finished.
Here's how long each type of anti-fog typically lasts, and what to do when yours runs out. Spoiler: a clear patch of anti-fog stickers inside the lens outlasts the rest by a long way.
Factory anti-fog coatings
Most goggles ship with an anti-fog layer on the inside of the lens. Brands are careful not to put a number on it. TYR's director of marketing told U.S. Masters Swimming that its life "really depends on the amount of use and type of care you give to your goggles," and the same article suggests the coating wears off after a few weeks of regular use. Speedo says goggles can outlast their anti-fog with regular use (Speedo).
In practice, regular swimmers usually notice fog creeping back within weeks. Once a factory coating is gone, it can't be re-applied at home.
Built-in and reactivating anti-fog
Some newer goggles go further. Arena's Swipe goggles let you reactivate the anti-fog by swiping the lens in the water, and Arena says it lasts up to 10 times longer than its earlier anti-fog (Swimming World). Effortless Swimming markets its NanoClear lenses as permanent anti-fog, though some reviewers report fog returning after weeks or months. More on that in our NanoClear goggles guide.
Sprays, drops, baby shampoo and spit
These last one session at best. In our experience, most sprays barely make it through a set, and many sting. They put a temporary film on the lens that washes off in the water, so you reapply before every swim. Even Arena's own spray says to "re-apply periodically." Swim three times a week and that's well over 30 applications in three months, at least two per swim if you're doing both lenses.
Here's what goggle brands don't put on the box: Speedo, Arena, TYR and Zoggs all sell goggles with built-in anti-fog, and all four also sell anti-fog spray to fix them when that anti-fog wears off. If the factory anti-fog lasted, there'd be nothing to sell.
FOG OFF! anti-fog patches
FOG OFF! anti-fog patches are a clear film that sticks inside each lens and replaces the worn-out coating. One application lasts 3+ months (based on 3+ swims a week). The exact time depends on how often you swim and how you look after your goggles. It reaches full strength over your first 2 to 3 swims, and a quick dip-and-rub before each swim keeps it working.
At a glance
- Factory coating: weeks to months, then gone for good.
- Sprays, drops, shampoo, spit: one session.
- FOG OFF! patch: 3+ months per application.
How to make any anti-fog last longer
- Rinse your goggles in fresh, cool water after every swim.
- Never wipe or touch the inside of the lens.
- Let them air dry and store them in a case.
- Keep them out of the sun and hot cars.
