Speedo Goggles Fogging Up? Fix Them Before You Buy a New Pair

Swimmer at the pool adjusting clear, fog-free swim goggles

You've finally found the Speedo goggles that fit: no leaks, no headaches, no raccoon eyes. Then a few weeks later they start fogging up mid-set, and the usual advice is to buy another pair. Hold that thought. Your goggles aren't broken, it's just the anti-fog!

The fog comes from the anti-fog layer inside the lens wearing off, and you can replace that layer without replacing the goggles. Clear anti-fog lens patches stick inside each lens and keep your favourite Speedos fog-free for months. Here's why the fog starts, what to check, and how to fix it.

Why Speedo goggles fog up

Fog is condensation: warm, humid air inside your goggles hits a lens cooled by the water. Anti-fog stops that moisture forming droplets you can't see through. Speedo explains on its own blog that how long the anti-fog lasts depends on the lens:

  • On hard polycarbonate lenses, the anti-fog is a coating applied to the lens, and it can wear away with use.
  • On softer cellulose acetate lenses, the anti-fog is built into the material.

Speedo also says goggles can outlast their anti-fog with regular use, and suggests a new pair if old or heavily used goggles fog. That's the part we'd push back on. If the strap, seals and lenses are still good, it's a lot of plastic to throw away over one worn-out layer.

And here's the kicker: Speedo also sells its own anti-fog spray for when the anti-fog on its goggles wears off. If the built-in anti-fog lasted, there'd be no spray to sell. In our experience, sprays barely last one session and often sting.

Quick checks before anything else

  • Fit: if water is getting in, the inside of the lens gets wet and fogs faster. Adjust the strap and nose bridge first.
  • Hands off the lens: wiping the inside with fingers, a towel or your cap strips anti-fog quickly.
  • Residue: sunscreen, moisturiser and shampoo on your face or hands can transfer to the lens.
  • Storage: goggles left wet in a kitbag age faster. Dry them and keep them in a case.

Speedo's care tips (worth following)

Speedo's goggle care advice is solid: rinse in fresh, lukewarm water after each swim, let them air dry, store them in a case, and don't use soap or detergent for everyday cleaning. Good care makes the anti-fog last longer. It won't make it last forever.

Fix the fog without buying new Speedos

FOG OFF! is a clear anti-fog patch that works on goggles of any brand, Speedo included. One size fits any swim goggle, and one application gives you 3+ months of fog-free swims (based on 3+ swims a week).

  1. Remove the old factory anti-fog. This is a one-off prep step: wash the inside of each lens with a little detergent and a clean microfibre cloth until the old film is completely gone, then dry it thoroughly. The patch won't stick or work properly over the old coating.
  2. Apply. Peel the RED tab, position the patch with the BLACK tab (nose side first), press firmly from the nose edge outward, then peel off the BLACK tab.
  3. Activate before each swim. Dip in water and gently rub the film. It reaches full strength over your first 2 to 3 swims.

When it really is time for new Speedos

A new anti-fog layer can't fix a leaking seal, a snapped strap or a cracked lens. If that's what you're dealing with, here's when to replace swim goggles.

FOG OFF! isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Speedo. Speedo is a trademark of its owner, used here only to describe the goggles our patches fit.
