TYR goggles are a staple on deck, from the Socket Rockets racers to everyday training pairs. And like every goggle, they come with an anti-fog layer that won't last forever. When your TYRs start fogging up mid-set, it's tempting to grab a new pair. You don't have to: your goggles aren't broken, it's just the anti-fog!
The worn-out layer can be replaced with a clear anti-fog film that sticks inside each lens and keeps your TYRs clear for months. Here's what TYR itself says about anti-fog, what to check first, and how to fix it.
What TYR says about anti-fog
TYR's director of marketing, Jared Berger, told U.S. Masters Swimming that the life of the anti-fog "really depends on the amount of use and type of care you give to your goggles." His tips: rinse your goggles in cold water after each use, and avoid wiping or touching the inside of the lens so you don't damage the coating.
That's good advice, and it slows the wear down. But regular swimming still wears the coating away eventually, and once it's gone, it's gone.
And here's the kicker: TYR also sells its own anti-fog spray, Perfect View, for when the anti-fog on its goggles wears off. Its listed ingredients are water, isopropyl alcohol and detergent, right next to your eyes. In our experience, sprays barely last one session and often sting.
Quick checks before anything else
- Fit: water getting in wets the lens and makes fog worse. Adjust the strap and nose piece.
- Hands off the lens: as TYR says, don't wipe or touch the inside.
- Residue: sunscreen, moisturiser and shampoo transfer to the lens easily.
- Storage: rinse, let them dry, and keep them in a case rather than a wet kitbag.
Fix the fog without buying new TYRs
FOG OFF! is a clear anti-fog lens patch that works on goggles of any brand, TYR included. One size fits any swim goggle, and one application gives you 3+ months of fog-free swims (based on 3+ swims a week). No sprays to pack, nothing to redo before every session.
- Remove the old factory anti-fog. A one-off prep step: wash the inside of each lens with a little detergent and a clean microfibre cloth until the old coating is completely gone, then dry it thoroughly. The patch won't stick or work properly over the old coating.
- Apply. Peel the RED tab, position the patch with the BLACK tab (nose side first), press firmly from the nose edge outward, then peel off the BLACK tab.
- Activate before each swim. Dip in water and gently rub the film. It reaches full strength over your first 2 to 3 swims.

When it really is time for new TYRs
A new anti-fog layer can't fix a leaking seal, a snapped strap or a cracked lens. If that's the problem, read when to replace swim goggles.
FOG OFF! isn't affiliated with or endorsed by TYR. TYR, Socket Rockets and Perfect View are trademarks of their owner, used here only to describe the goggles our patches fit.
